  8. Trying to solve quadratic equations by taking square roots is what brought me to this nightmarish place. And I've been unable to walk away even with my efficient, self-directed walker.

  9. "This nightmarish place" being Don QuiScottieland Claude?

    ... or Planet Earth?

I am puzzled (and also puzzled by the concept of a self-directed walker - it decides where to take you?)

No need to explain though. I like enigmas.
